Area, Surface Area & Volume Problems — Mixed
Each problem is a composed figure in context. Find the area, surface area, or volume it asks for.
ExampleA school is laying turf on this L-shaped playing area. Turf costs $8 per m².
Find the area, then the cost of the turf.
Take the missing corner away from the full rectangle: 8 × 8 = 64 m², and the cut-out is 4 × 5 = 20 m². Area = 64 − 20 = 44 m². Cost = 44 × $8 = $352. (Splitting it into two rectangles instead gives the same area — check it either way.)
1.A school is laying turf on this L-shaped playing area. Turf costs $5 per m².
Find the area, then the cost of the turf.
2.A chocolate bar is a triangular prism. Its triangular end has a base of 6 cm and a height of 7 cm, and the bar is 13 cm long.
Find the volume of the bar. How many bars would fill a box of 2000 cm³?
3.A room is 7 m long, 4 m wide and 3 m high. The four walls and the ceiling are to be painted, but not the floor. There is 1 doorway of 2 m² each, which is not painted. One tin covers 10 m². Find the area to be painted and the number of tins needed.
4.A room is 5 m long, 3 m wide and 3 m high. The four walls and the ceiling are to be painted, but not the floor. There is 1 doorway of 2 m² each, which is not painted. One tin covers 10 m². Find the area to be painted and the number of tins needed.
5.A room is 6 m long, 5 m wide and 3 m high. The four walls and the ceiling are to be painted, but not the floor. There is 1 doorway of 2 m² each, which is not painted. One tin covers 12 m². Find the area to be painted and the number of tins needed.
