Coordinate Plane: Real-World Problems
Find the side lengths from the coordinates, then decide whether the question wants perimeter or area.
ExampleA garden is mapped on a grid where one unit is one meter. Its corners are at (-5, -2), (-2, -2), (-2, 3) and (-5, 3).
Fencing costs $6 a meter. How much fencing is needed, and what will it cost?
The sides are -2 − (-5) = 3 m and 3 − (-2) = 5 m. Fencing goes all the way round, so it is the perimeter: 2(3 + 5) = 16 m. Cost = 16 × $6 = $96. (Fencing follows the perimeter, not the area — area would be for turf or paving.)
1.A garden is mapped on a grid where one unit is one meter. Its corners are at (−5, 1), (−2, 1), (−2, 5) and (−5, 5).
Fencing costs $5 a meter. How much fencing is needed, and what will it cost?
2.A garden is mapped on a grid where one unit is one meter. Its corners are at (−3, −4), (1, −4), (1, 0) and (−3, 0).
Fencing costs $5 a meter. How much fencing is needed, and what will it cost?
3.A garden is mapped on a grid where one unit is one meter. Its corners are at (0, −1), (4, −1), (4, 4) and (0, 4).
Fencing costs $6 a meter. How much fencing is needed, and what will it cost?
4.A garden is mapped on a grid where one unit is one meter. Its corners are at (−2, −3), (2, −3), (2, 1) and (−2, 1).
Fencing costs $4 a meter. How much fencing is needed, and what will it cost?
5.A garden is mapped on a grid where one unit is one meter. Its corners are at (−1, −2), (5, −2), (5, 0) and (−1, 0).
Fencing costs $5 a meter. How much fencing is needed, and what will it cost?
